Keeping it social in your retirement

Whoever said retirement was boring obviously hadn’t spent time in a retirement village!

At Matua Village we pride ourselves on our monthly activity planner that helps keep our community of residents engaged and active with regular onsite social and exercise activities as well as weekly shopping jaunts.

Not to be too predictable, we also like to kick it up a notch as it’s not just about the regular activities but also the ‘day out’ excursions filled with fun experiences and exciting locations along with great company.

We also arrange captivating guest speakers to keep our residents informed on topical subjects and matters of interest, creating a safe environment to ask questions and share our thoughts.

The benefit of a retirement village is that you belong to a community of likeminded people, so you can still be as social as you like, even if you no longer drive. Most of our residents still have their own cars, others can no longer drive or prefer not to, and that’s okay too. That’s why we make it as easy as possible for those who don’t drive to still be independent by providing trips to the supermarket on the “village bus” twice a week. Residents can still do their own grocery shopping, without relying on family and friends to take them, which for many was an important consideration when choosing to move to Matua Village.

We also plan visits to the various shopping centres. We mix it up by visiting a different shopping centre each week, to add a little spice to life and so residents can really get out and see the whole community that surrounds them. And, once a month, we organise our Big Day out.  This could be anything from a trip to Hamilton Gardens, McLaren Falls, Ross Bros Car Museum in Cambridge, or our residents recently went rail cruising in Rotorua.

However, if you would rather stay at the village, then maybe you would like to stay fit and active in one of our regular fitness classes at the village, or you can join one of the bowls teams at the indoor bowls table or take part in the weekly walking group. The nearby Matua Saltmarsh Reserve provides a lovely boardwalk for a leisurely stroll through nature. It’s also the perfect place for a spot of bird watching.

If inside activities are more your style then join us at happy hour, social group, mahjong, bingo or a sneaky ice cream with Mrs Whippy when she visits.

To be honest it’s not about being social all the time though. It’s about being social at the pace you choose. Whether living in a cottage, apartment, or care studio at Matua Village you remain in control. That is what Matua Village retirement living is all about. It is about retaining your individuality and independence, as well as having a sense of belonging, while living in a community that encourages social interaction, friendship and camaraderie.  Importantly, the balance between each of these is entirely up to you.

This is what being social in your retirement should look like. Living your life…. The Matua Village way.
